The Synapses Academy International Professional Development Course 2025 took place in Marathon, Attica, Greece, from June 29th to July 4th, gathering educators and school leaders from across Europe for a week of inspiration, learning, and exchange. The week was filled with keynote talks, hands-on workshops, cultural experiences, and unforgettable moments of community.

The summer school welcomed participants from across Europe, beginning with arrivals, registration, and introductions. Six keynote presentations set the stage, exploring essential themes like the foundations of Sustainability and Active Citizenship, the challenges of assessing complex competences, and how schools can act as living labs for change.

Monday started with a lively warm-up and an overview of the learning outcomes for the week. Through the day, the program split into two tailored tracks, where teacher and school head did different sessions. In the afternoon, participants enjoyed a guided visit to the breathtaking Cape Sounio and the ancient Sanctuary of Poseidon, complete with a sunset view and group dinner.

On Tuesday, teachers concentrated on community building, healthy habits, and food literacy in schools, while school heads focused on cultivating collective efficacy and a culture of continuous learning. Both groups also participated in an innovative virtual interactive food exhibition and visited the facilities at Ellinogermaniki Agogi.
Wednesday highlighted current trends and practices in sustainability and education. Teachers explored strategies to transform schools into models of energy efficiency, aligned with the New European Bauhaus initiative. School heads dived into discussions about the evolving role of educators in the age of Artificial Intelligence. The day concluded with a cultural visit to the Acropolis Museum and the iconic Parthenon, followed by a group dinner in central Athens.

On Thursday, educators participated in interactive sessions on energy-efficient building principles within the context of the New European Bauhaus, while school leaders examined the practical aspects of implementing a whole-school approach. In the afternoon, both groups came together to identify funding opportunities, reflect on their experiences, and develop action plans. The day ended with a joyful farewell dinner, celebrating new friendships and potential collaborations.

During the summer school, participants also had the opportunity to interact with two innovative exhibits featured in the conference hall: the “CLEVERFOOD for Everyone” interactive exhibition, which highlighted sustainable food systems, and LEXIE, an AI-powered interactive hologram designed to assist teachers during classroom lessons. These cutting-edge tools sparked dialogue about the future of education and technology integration in schools.
The program concluded on Friday with participant presentations, certificate ceremonies, and heartfelt goodbyes. Each attendee departed with a concrete scenario or green action plan ready for implementation in their schools this September, with new professional connections and, most importantly, participants left feeling inspired, empowered, and ready to lead positive change in their school communities.
